Peter King is, in the words of one critic, "the finest alto saxophonist that Britain has ever produced, and one of the finest in the world today" (Dave Gelly, 'The Giants of Jazz', Aurum Press). He also served as a GMF course tutor in 2006.
As most of you were probably aware, Peter's health reached an all-time low a short while ago and the doctors told him that he had a 90% chance of lung cancer. The result of a biopsy showed negative for cancer and a sigh of relief was breathed all around by his friends and fans around the world. But Peter has in fact suffered a very severe and rare form or pneumonia and, although now recovering, he is still not out of the woods.
A very special evening is to honour Peter (while he is still with us) and his enormous contribution to music, by staging this concert in the same club where he played for the opening on Friday 30th October 1959 - Ronnie Scott's.
The proceeds will go to Peter so that he can recover from the financial loss he suffered as a result of not being able to work during his illness, and to help cover the costs of a huge dental job that needs to be done if he is to be able to continue playing and bringing joy to the public and musicians alike for years to come.
