Roland Melia was a scholar at the Royal Academy of Music, London where as a cellist he won two prizes for chamber music. A Countess of Munster Award allowed him to study privately with Pierre Fournier. Following this he worked as a principal cellist with the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, the Snape Maltings Chamber Orchestra and the contemporary music ensemble, Lontano. He also freelanced with orchestras including Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Northern Sinfonia, City of London Sinfonia and English National Opera. Following studies with David Robertson and Ilya Musin he conducted orchestras in Britain including Bournemouth Sinfonietta, Britten Sinfonia, and Royal Ballet. Abroad he worked with the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland and St Petersburg Philharmonic as well as Symphony Orchestras in Portugal, Mexico and Chile. Melia has been the Artistic Director of Leicester Symphony Orchestra and Cyprus State Orchestra. He has also produced CDs for ASV and NAXOS.
