Marney O’Sullivan

Timpani and Percussion, Ireland

Born in Dublin, he began his career there working in jazz, rock and theatre as well as with the radio orchestras. He studied in London and Milan, and in 1986 was chosen to play principal timpani for Claudio Abbado in the European Union Youth Orchestra. Soon afterwards he moved to Manchester, where he spent four years as a member of the the HallÈ Orchestra percussion section.

Marney O'Sullivan has been Principal Timpanist of the Orchestra of Opera North (formerly English Northern Philharmonia) since 1991. He combines his full-time commitment to Opera North with invitations to perform with the London Philharmonic and other major UK orchestras. Marney has contributed to over one hundred CD and DVD recordings and has performed in many of the world's most famous concert halls, opera houses, studios and festivals - working with conductors such as Bernard Haitink, AndrÈ Previn, Kurt Masur, Sir Mark Elder and composers such as Sir Michael Tippett, Carl Davis and Howard Shore.

For several years he directed the annual Percussion Summer School for Global Music Foundation. He is currently Professor of Timpani at Trinity College of Music in Greenwich, London.
