GMF All-Stars Shine at Guinness Cork Jazz Festival 2011
The Global Music Foundation's team of internationally-acclaimed musicians provided many of the highlights at this year's Guinness Cork Jazz Festival, staging workshops and performances throughout the Festival weekend. Read the All About Jazz review of the event here.
For the third successive year, GMF partnered with Cork School of Music and Fáilte Ireland to produce Cork Jazz Camp, a weekend-long programme of performances, workshops and masterclasses. Kansas City alto sax great Bobby Watson served as Jazz Camp Ambassador and, together with New York pianist Bruce Barth, Toronto bassist Duncan Hopkins and GMF Director/drummer Stephen Keogh, led an ensemble workshop ahead of their Friday evening concert at the Triskel Christchurch arts centre. Duncan Hopkins and Bruce Barth also led instrumental masterclasses for bass and piano, respectively, while Stephen Keogh and Italian percussionist/drummer Francesco Petreni led "rhythm gym" sessions which introduced Festival goers to samba music-making and UK vocalist/pianist Pete Churchill led a gospel choir workshop.
Bruce Barth also led a Saturday late night Trio concert (with Bobby Watson and Francesco Petreni as guests) at the Metropole Festival Club. A special Jazz & Poetry Feast on Sunday afternoon featured the GMF team providing music accompaniment to readings by Irish poets Ross Sutherland, Paul Casey, Billy Ramsell and Ailbhe Ní Ghearbhuigh.
