Cork Jazz Futures Final showcases rising international music talent

Musicians from the UK, Ireland, Germany and Chile treated audiences to a feast of original music and jazz standards in a closely-contested final at the Guinness Cork Jazz Festival 23 October 2010.

The Cork Jazz Futures competition was inaugurated in partnership with Global Music Foundation in 2009 to recognise emerging jazz talent in small ensembles from Ireland and overseas.  The competition was adjudicated by Ross Dines, Music Director of Pizza Express Jazz Club in London, and guitarist/composer Hugh Buckley.

Magic Carpet - featuring pianist CSL Parker and drummer Tom Corcoran - took the Island of Ireland category.

The International finalists included a Birmingham Conservatoire-based quartet - featuring drummer/bandleader Ric Yarborough (shown in photo), Alex Woods (sax), Doug McMillan (guitar) and Hamish Livingstone (double bass) - and the international trio of Nora Kamm (soprano sax, Germany), Tomas Peralta (bass guitar, Chile) and Florence Moore (double bass, UK).

The Ric Yarborough Quartet won both the International and Overall Award categories.  The ensemble will be invited back to perform at the 2011 Cork Jazz Festival.
