About this Summer School

A new event in the GMF calender. Once again the spectacular setting, the team of outstanding performers and teachers, and the range of activity all add up to an unforgettable experience for everyone who takes part.

  • An exceptional roster of artists/teachers from around the world.
  • Intensive study, equivalent to a whole term at a music conservatory - some 5 hours tuition per day, including supervised rehearsals, instrumental classes and one-to-one lessons
  • A wealth of opportunities to sing and play: two student concerts, nightly jam sessions and other spontaneous events
  • Free admission to over concerts given by members of the faculty and guest artists
  • A range of complementary disciplines to broaden your horizons: Choir, Pulse Training, Ear Training, Samba, Alexander Technique
  • A wonderful, atmospheric coastal-town setting with friendly, convivial people

The course provides first-class tuition and many opportunities to listen and perform. And, in keeping with GMF’s philosophy, the course takes a broad view of music-making; the instrumental, vocal, rhythmic and physical disciplines together lead the participant towards new levels of understanding, concentration and awareness.

The Right Course For You?

The course is not aimed at complete beginners. You will benefit most if you already have some experience playing with other musicians - the type of group or ensemble doesn't matter.

Who Should Apply

Location

Kos lies north west of Rhodes and south east of continental Greece. Is the third largest of the Dodecanese Islands after Rhodes and Karpathos.

Aside from it's natural beauty and it's golden sandy beaches, it is steeped in monuments, remnants from its glorious past, dating from ancient Greece, the Byzantine Era and Venetian times up to the present.

Kos is the island of Hippocrates who is thought of as the first medical doctor in the world. He founded a medical school on the island of Kos, Greece and began teaching his ideas. His Oath of Medical Ethics for physicians to follow. This Oath is taken by physicians today as they begin their medical practice. He died in 377 BC. Today Hippocrates is known as the "Father of Medicine".

The Tree of Hippocrates is the plane tree under which, according to the legend, Hippocrates of Kos (considered the father of medicine) taught his pupils the art of medicine. Paul of Tarsus purportedly taught here as well. The Platanus in Kos is an Oriental plane, with a crown diameter of about 12 meters, said to be the largest for a plane tree in Europe.
