International Festival of Music and the Arts
Dunmore East, Ireland, 16–23 June 2010

The Vocal and Instrumental Course

Instrumentalists and vocalists will cover a wide variety of styles including Jazz, Blues, Celtic, Folk, Choir and Latin music. The course provides a unique opportunity to learn, explore and gain insight into working in several different genres: Jazz, Latin, Celtic Folk and World music.

The Dance Course

Dancers will focus on Salsa and dance from Celtic countries. Alyth McCormack was brought up on the Island of Lewis within the Gaelic culture which is known for its wealth of song, music and prose and Alyth grew up singing these songs. There are various types: working songs such as waulking, rowing and spinning; love songs; laments and, particular to Scottish Gaelic, the puirt a beul or 'mouth music'. These are dancing songs written specifically for their rhythm and were used for dancing to when there were no musicians about.

The Martial Arts Course

Martial Artists have a rare opportunity to train with Master Bob Breen and train in Kali, Escrima, Arnis, Jeet Kune Do and more.

The Poetry Course

Workshops led by Anne-Marie Fyfe will allow writers and would-be writers to explore their own experiences of, and imaginative responses to, a chosen theme, through a range of resources and techniques, through examples from literature and the wider culture, through visual imagery and through led exercises, resulting in finished work in each session, and in constructive mutual criticism.

The Poetry course will run from June 17-20 inclusive. Fee for the Poetry Course is 200 Euros.

Applicants also have the option to stay on as a listener for the rest of the seminar (total fee = 300 Euros).

There is also the option to join either the music, vocal or martial arts course from June 21-23 inclusive (total fee = 355 Euros - 345 euros if booked before 15 April 2010).

Morning Workshops

At the beginning of each day, students on all the courses come together to participate in a unique sequence of activities which collectively stimulate self-awareness and enhance creativity.

Pulse Training - Stephen Keogh

Pulse lies at the heart of music, and developing one's own inner pulse is the goal of these sessions. The work fosters awareness - of the pulse, of silence, of the other members of the group. This workshop is hugely beneficial to musicians of every kind.

Vocal and Body - Guillermo Rozenthuler

The workshop explores the use of energy and the voice, and fine tuning body and mind coordination within a musical context. Using song material from all around the world we work at enhancing the quality of our listening skills and the sounds we produce.

Samba - Felix Gibbons, Percussion and Guillermo Rozenthuler, Voice

A group workshop in which we train and learn the various different calls and rhythms, under the guidance of Felix Gibbons and Guillermo Rozenthuler. The singers will learn some of the traditional songs as performed at the carnivals of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paolo. On the last day of the course there will be an open air public performance during which we will bring the joy and the spirit of carnival to Dunmore East. Every night at the jam sessions there will be opportunities to play Samba Cançao in a small group setting.

Martial Arts - Bob Breen

Bob Breen is regarded as the father of JKD and the Filipino martial arts in Europe. He is probably one of the most unique individuals in the martial arts world, and is renowned for his teaching abilities and his knowledge.

Poetry - Cahal Dallat and Anne-Marie Fyfe

Jazz and poetry have a natural affiliation as both explore abstraction, expression and improvisation.
