GMF LONDON JAZZ WORKSHOP AND MUSIC FESTIVAL AUGUST 17 - 21, 2016

The Festival brings a team of some of the worlds leading Jazz Artists to London's leading Jazz Venue. 

A full programme of Concerts between August 17th - 21st is offered. Don't miss performances by René Marie, Perico Sambeat, Jean Toussaint and many more.

Each night after the main concert Jam Sessions running into the wee small hours are held, where the featured artists and course participants come together to play. These sessions are often spirited, joyful and spontaneous affairs.

Entry is included to all concerts and Jam Sessions for all course participants and Listener/Observers!

Global Music Foundation All Stars in Concert

Global Music Foundation brings a dynamic festival to Pizza Express for a dazzling series of concerts, workshops and "after hours" sessions, featuring some of the world's leading Jazz Artists.

Since 2004 Global Music Foundation has celebrated music making with many great musicians from around the world. Tonight's opening concert will feature this years gathering of world-class artists, in a variety of combinations and formats. It provides a taste of what is to come during the week's musical festivities.

US Piano Giant Bruce Barth with his Trio and special guest UK Saxophone Legend Peter King 

Bruce Barth is without doubt one of the great jazz pianists of our time. Deeply rooted in the jazz tradition, his music reflects the depth and breadth of his life and musical experiences. He has had extended collaborations with Tony Bennett, Terell Stafford, Luciana Souza, Stanely Turrentine, Steve Wilson and David Sánchez and was a long standing member of the Terence Blanchard Quintet. In 1992, Bruce played piano on-screen in Spike Lee’s Malcolm X. 

Tonight is an extra special occasion. The performance will be filmed and recorded for an album to be released on the Miles Music label. Making a very special appearance as guest soloist is UK Jazz Legend Peter King. Join us and be part of a piece of musical history in the making.

Jazz Diva Rene Marie in Concert 

Grammy nominated artist Rene Marie is firmly established as one of the greatest living jazz vocalists.

In a span of two decades, 11 recordings and countless stage performances, vocalist René Marie has cemented her reputation as not only a singer but also a composer, arranger, theatrical performer and teacher. Guided and tempered by powerful life lessons and rooted in jazz traditions laid down by Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington and other greats of past generations, she incoporates elements of folk, R&B, country and even Classical music to create a captivating hybrid style. Her 2013 CD release I Wanna Be Evil: With Love To Eartha Kitt, earned a Grammy nomination in the Best Jazz Vocals category. René Marie made several appearances on the Billboard charts and won Best International Jazz Vocal CD by France's Academie Du Jazz.

Perico Sambeat Sextet "New View"

Perico Sambeat - one of the best alto saxophonists in the world today and one of the most important Jazz musicians to have come out of Europe.

His artistic collaborations boast a list of musicians of the very highest caliber including Brad Mehldau, Pat Metheny,  Kurt Rosenwinkel, Tete Montoliu, Michael Brecker, and many more. Join us for a night of inspiring music from a truly compelling band led by this fantastic alto saxophone star.

Sambeat has received numerous awards including the prestigious "Bird Award" given by the North Sea Jazz Festival to the musician deserving wider recognition (2003), and best recording of the year for "Flamenco Big Band" (2008 and 2009).

This concert will feature a selection Perico’s award winning compositions and premier new compositions.

Francesco Petreni "Festa Do Brasil" 

A passionate, colourful, and evocative night of rich music imbued with the vital firey and explosive rhythms of Latin America.  A wonderful band led by this truly fantastic, virtuosic drummer, percussionist and composer. He has played with many of the great musicians, including Marc Johnson, Jonny Griffin, Palle Danielsson, Mal Waldron, Ivan Lins, Eddie Henderson, Claudio Roditi, Cameron Brown, George Cables, Guinga, Paolo Fresu, Avishai Cohen, participating in hundreds of international festivals, and concerts all over Europe Cuba and Brazil.

He directs, and arranges and conducts  "Bandao Percussion Orchestra" with which has performed more than 300 concerts, festivals and carnivals (London, Salvador de Bahia, Rio de Janeiro, Coburg,Venice, Milan, Viareggio).

Sunday 21 5pm 

Student Concert - Ensembles + Choir + Samba 

This concert is when the workshop participants, who have been working hard with their instrumental and vocal coaches to refine and improve their musicianship, and get the opportunity to play in public. Each ensemble will perform the pieces they have been creating and working on during the week. The vocal groups will perform a colourful mix of pieces. The event finishes up in true party style with an energetic and exciting performance by the Samba group led by master percussionist Francesco Petreni, during which they will dance, sing and play Samba, Afoxe, Maracatu, Samba Reggae and Funk rhythms from different areas of Brazil. Often the audience can't help joining in.

Rising Stars - The Fresh Sounds of New Talent

Czech Guitar star Libor Smoldas hosts a very special night dedicated to the some of the brightest rising musical stars. We are especially happy to stage a concert of some of the exceptionally gifted musicians that have spent time as students on our courses, and who have now embark on their own professional careers and journeys as artists. All of them are well on the way to become the next rising stars. Expect to hear highly accomplished exciting music, often with a new original twist.

The After Hours Sessions - Jam Sessions

Every night after the main act join us for great music, a relaxed atmosphere, a sympathetic inter-generational crowd and a fully licensed bar. It's what the "hang" is all about.

Jam sessions can be full of surprises. You get different combinations of musicians on stage that might not normally happen at a planned event. Often important musical connections are made and all takes place in a festive atmosphere.

Jam sessions are the heart of after-hours jazz and are key to maintaining the jazz scene’s social fabric. They bring together the community of jazz artists who come for the camaraderie, spontaneity and sometimes to test and prove themselves.
