Jazz Futures International Competition at Guinness Cork Jazz Festival, 22-25 October 2010

Application and rules of the competition

Entry is open to all International Jazz Ensembles whose members are not residents of Ireland. The ensembles should have not less than 2, and not more than 5 members.

The maximum age limit of each member of the participating groups will be at 35 years old on or before November 1st 2010. Date of birth to be provided at the time of application. Applicants may be asked to provide proof of age at any time during the competition.

Global Music Foundation will choose 2 ensembles from the applicants. The chosen groups will perform at the finals of the competition on Sunday October 24th 2010, in front of a panel of Judges selected by Guinness Cork Jazz Festival

The applications for entry to the competition should be accompanied by any background material which demonstrates the quality of the group. CD recording/DVD recording/MP3 must be sent - via post or email - to Global Music Foundation. If sent by email please use www.yousendit.com

A high resolution photograph of the group must also be sent with the application. Files must not big bigger than 1MB.

All applications must be made via the online form below.

The closing date for applications is September 22nd 2010.

Finalists will be notified before October 3rd 2010.

Accommodation will be provided for the 2 groups that reach the final.

Travel to the festival will be at the applicants' expense. Cork Jazz Festival does not provide travel expenses to finalists. Please see section called "the prize".

The prize

The winning group will be reimbursed for all travel expenses and accommodation by Guinness Cork Jazz Festival for their appearance in the competition final October 2010.

The winning group will be invited to perform at the Guinness Cork Jazz Festival 2011 with fees paid (to be negotiated), and all travel and accommodation expenses paid by Guinness Cork Jazz Festival.

The winning group will be invited to attend a Global Music Foundation seminar in 2011 on a "free of course fee" scholarship.

Obligatory requirements

Each ensemble must perform 1 original composition by a member of the band, and 2 pieces from the list of tunes below:

  • Donna Lee - by Charlie parker
  • The Song is You - By Kern and Hammerstein
  • The Peacocks - by Jimmy Rowles 
  • Any Blues of choice 

The decision

Guinness Cork Jazz Festival and Global Music Foundation reserve the right to modify the present rules, when and if circumstances so require.

Participation in the jazz futures competition of the Cork Jazz Festival implies the acceptance of all the above rules.

The decision of the judges will be final and not open to appeal. The judges may adopt whatever criteria they consider appropriate.

The Contest may be recorded by a TV, Radio or other Media and these recordings remain the property of Guinness Cork Jazz Festival.
