Music is the universal language of mankind (Longfellow)

The Global Music Foundation is a nonprofit organization, formed in December 2004.

It runs residential educational and performance workshops and events in different countries around the world. These involve students and professionals sharing knowledge and ideas; playing together; discussion groups and all manner of musical and artistic activities.

The GMF believes that such events are an ideal way for people, whatever their background, to come together under the guidance of expert teachers to learn, listen and make music.

It offers an open and friendly atmosphere which embraces both oral and written traditions from all over the world.

The Global Music Foundation aims to provide a creative environment where musicians and artists can share ideas, knowledge, and experience. Learning and communicating together, with people of different backgrounds from all over the world, leading to cultural enrichment, understanding and the breaking down of barriers, for the benefit of all.

The workshops provide a balance of formal instrumental classes, group workshops and activities, discussion groups, audio and video sessions. Informal and spontaneous events are encouraged and there is a programme of concerts throughout the duration of the seminar. The seminar culminates with a final concert in which students and teachers participate.

The Foundation also runs special projects which are designed to bring improvisational music to a wider audience around the world.

GMF Seminars

The vast combined experience of the GMF directors, teachers and panel members informs the opinion that to let music "take place", and essentially to form the skills needed to communicate efficiently in this ever-changing world, a certain openness, combined with the ability to listen is needed.
The structure of the workshops has its emphasis on group interaction, as well as on one-to-one learning.

Brief description of typical GMF Seminar
Mornings are set aside for instrumental classes where the students get expert tuition both privately and in a group setting.
In the afternoons several combos (or ensembles) are formed from the student body. During these sessions tutors are on hand to coach the groups in composing, arranging and playing through various pieces of music giving advice and guidance where neededand to help with any difficulties encountered.
Most evenings concert performances by both tutors and students are organized which gives everyone an opportunity to socialize and interact in a less formal environment.

Guest Teachers

At present most of the musical education is taught through the art form of Jazz. Jazz, as a musical style, is inherently open to all other styles of music and is constantly changing and evolving by absorbing the influences of many different cultures.
However, guest teachers from all musical backgrounds and traditions will be involved in future seminars.

Scholarships

Applications for scholarships are open to students from all around the world.

Other Art Forms

By facilitating the creation of situations where people from different artistic backgrounds can meet and share their experiences we feel that everyone involved will gain a greater knowledge and understanding of their chosen art form.

We will shortly publish details of a new poetry prize which we are developing jointly with the Comune di Certaldo in Italy.
